Dreams vs Reality

A couple of weeks ago, it was I Want 2 Be Day for the Kids Cancer Project.

And it got me thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up.

At first I wanted to be a ballerina, then a nurse and pretty much whatever else my older girl cousin wanted to be.

Then I wanted to be a writer and spent hours writing and illustrating stories about birthday parties I went to and sequels for some of the characters from the books I read.

In high school it seemed like it was a bit early to be deciding what I wanted to be. I just knew that I liked Geography and Society and Culture, but what sort of job could you get with that?

I envied the people that knew they wanted to be doctors and lawyers and had a clear study path set out before them.

So, I took a year off, went travelling, came back, took another year off, and eventually decided to give this writing thing a go and study for a BA Communication (Journalism).

At university, I enjoyed public relations and editing and publishing and despaired at the reality that real journalism jobs were not well paid and hard to find.

So I worked for a print production company because they employed me, worked for an architectural visualisation firm because it sounded interesting and tried PR which I found I actually hated in practice.

I worked for various not-for-profits and charities and discovered there that I was good at event organising, but was it really what I wanted to be?

So I took some writing courses at the Australian Writer’s Centre and started writing a blog in my spare time. Isn’t it funny how life has turned a full circle and now I want to be a writer again?

I guess a dream is only a dream until you make it a reality.

Perhaps I lacked direction, focus and certainty about my dream before, but now I can see that it could become reality.

Maybe in the past I expected my dream to be clear and happen easily and quickly. Now I realise that dreams take time and effort and that’s what makes them a dream in the first place.

It’s a long term goal that if you didn’t really want to do, you wouldn’t have the drive to make a reality.

It’s that niggling thought in the back of your head, that won’t go away no matter how unrealistic it seems.

We live in a world where career changes are possible, going back to study is acceptable and changing your mind is allowed.

So, what did you want to be when you grew up? Perhaps it’s time to revisit that dream and take stock of your reality?

What’s Inspiring about your Event?

Inspire EX is an exhibition and showcase for events professionals held in Sydney. I went to the event two years ago to attend some educational seminars and found out that “What’s hot right now” in events was Mexican. Mexican, I thought, what are they on about? Nobody does Mexican.

And then the whole world exploded with a love of Mexico. You couldn’t open an airline magazine without seeing another article on Tulum and Sydney became inundated with Mexican restaurants selling authentic fish tacos.

So, I came to InspireEX 2014 to be updated on what was hot, attend the keynote presentation by John Daly and find out the best use of Social Media for Events from Yvonne Adele.

John Daly’s keynote presentation, “What’s so great about face to face,” was inspiring and made me wish I could go and work with him in Santa Barbara on all his fun and exciting events. His concepts of teamwork, site inspections and working with timelines were illustrated by lovely examples of events he had worked on like the restoration of a garden at a French chateau, transforming a generic hotel foyer with a Japanese theme and being serenaded by the Vienna boys’ choir while fixing flowers to an altar for the Pope.

The new trend of hybrid events was also discussed- that is the use of social media for low budget events. The example given was of a surfer who tweeted 25 of his friends which translated in 1 million followers of 100 mini coopers shining headlights on the ocean at midnight while the surfers rode their waves.

And one final tip- never marry a divorce attorney.

Yvonne’s presentation on the best use of social media for events was very practical and useful with lots of ideas on things that a business can implement in social media to increase their event reach. The key is planning activities for before, during and after the event itself and finding the remarkable that can be re-marketed. Yvonne’s top two pieces of advice were to create content which is compelling to share and use the next level of social media platform tools. Smart stuff.

So, what’s hot right now? Tell me already, you say!

Well, according to a panel of top event professionals- Mexican is OUT and Simple and Rustic is IN.

And it’s also called on trend now.

People are looking for:

  • Extraordinary events
  • Unique venues
  • Visual memories
  • Colour
  • Statement pieces
  • Stand up dining
  • Interactive meals
  • East meets East cuisine e.g. Korean and US
  • Green screen entertainment e.g. hologram of performer who is not actually present at the event
  • The latest technology
  • Engagement in events
  • Volume

Watch the world around you for simple and rustic stand up restaurants with East meets East cuisine popping up everywhere and articles about rustic and simple extraordinary colourful events appearing in your airline magazines. And remember you heard it from me first!

The seven year itch

I have been to 50 weddings in my life, 40 of those in the last seven years. This is not an exaggeration- I have counted. I know it seems a little excessive, but the only explanation that I can give is that of a Catholic family and country school mates. Or maybe it’s just that I am really sociable and a fun wedding guest?!

My husband has been dragged to many of these wedding with me and vice versa. He has been in many bridal parties, has been the MC and an usher- while I have sat at the singles table. The only wedding that I have been in the bridal party for was my best friend’s wedding earlier this year.

What I know about weddings could fill a book. I have been to big weddings, small weddings, full catholic ceremonies, quickie celebrant ceremonies, church weddings, house weddings, reception hall weddings, hotel weddings, RSL weddings, fancy restaurant weddings, cocktail party weddings, sit down weddings, stand up weddings, garden weddings, beach weddings, winery weddings, weekend away weddings, destination weddings, a wedding in a courthouse, one in a library and a wedding on a tugboat.

I have been to weddings in Terrigal, the Hunter Valley, Berrima, Mount Wilson, Wollongong, Kangaroo Valley, Berry and Sydney. I have travelled to attend weddings in Melbourne, Hobart, Cairns and Darwin. I used to have a no overseas wedding rule, but after getting married in Thailand myself, I couldn’t really use that as a reason not to go anymore. So I have now also been to weddings in Fiji, Hawaii and Canada. The money I have spent on travel, accommodation, kitchen teas, hen’s nights/weekends away and wedding presents is a sum I don’t even want to think about- but it was all in good fun and each wedding has been special in its own way.

With my events background I would probably make a great wedding planner and I have considered this. I have a friend who does hair and make up, one trained in floristry and a friend that does photography. But the bottom line is that I could not deal with bridezillas.

Even the most sane and sensible people who swore they would never get caught up in the commercial hoop-la end up worrying about things like what is on the place cards. For my own wedding I did not give a toss about the details- I just got the hotel to do it all and make all the decisions. The cake was hideous- but who cares- I didn’t even want a cake and I didn’t choose it.

It dismays me when I see people getting caught up in all the little things, succumbing to family pressure and losing sight of themselves and what’s really important- two people making a commitment to each other and an excuse for a really good party. No one else is going to notice if the vase on table 1 is different to the vase on table 2, so just relax and enjoy the day.

The cost is also ridiculous- just mention the word wedding and the price triples. That’s why I was “shopping for my thirtieth” when I found my red wedding dress. Why would I wear white when red is my best colour? The average Australian wedding costs 50 thousand, which is enough for a long honeymoon and a good start on a flat deposit. Who wants to start their married life in debt?

And then there is the question of the second weddings. I have not been to one yet, but with a few friends divorced, it could happen. Do you automatically get an invite to the second wedding if you have been to the first or are you automatically excluded? Wether you go or not, do you have to buy another wedding present?

At the end of the day, each bride (and groom) needs to make the choice about what they want and be happy about it. If a big wedding with all the trimmings and a white dress is what you want, then go for it, but just be honest and say that is what you want from the beginning.
